Maintain, restore and create…
In this whole Tintype thing there should be more time for us to work on plateholders, inlays, restoring camera’s and so on. A bit jealous we are when we see Rick working in full focus on two of our camera’s. On two new plateholders to be exact. It makes us wish we’d have the patience and skills to make these, but then again it’s also a feast to see his work in progress from this point of view.

“Roog” tintype 13 cm x 18 cm

What we like to achieve in a portrait is the recognition of oneself in the image. An image can either be deceiving or reveal a reality that is hardly seen in daily behavior. To put a friend, the best you have in this galaxy, in front of the camera, is in that way scary and confronting. You never know what the image will reveal and if you’ll like it or not… In this case the image of Roog shows something rare and real, something truthful and loving. Not a smile to the outside world, but a thought accepted within.

"Bas" dark yellow glass ambrotype 18 cm x 24 cm
A portrait from our night in TROUW. We love this one. His blue hair appears as if it is blonde. His jewelry refers almost to a long forgotten empire from the past. His eyes closed, and his hands fragile, makes you think he is dreaming about the times he was ruler of the world. Thank you Bas, for this one!

On the 21st of December we shot some nice plates at Nachtbazaar in TROUW, Amsterdam. Some people knew us from Magnet Festival earlier this year, but for a lot of visitors tinypes and ambrotypes were a totally ‘new’ thing. Our first ‘sitter’ that evening was an extraordinary man with his old terrier (which fell asleep during the six sec exposure…). And his picture came out perfectly, very aristocratic look and feel. It’s a shame we don’t have a picture of that plate…

A strange gathering, but nice indeed!

I don’t know how come, but it seems there is a little angel on our schoulders when it comes to finding places and events to present the Tintype Studio. We never plan, or make reservations at all!
Again this year we were invited to tintype for two days during the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. We needed a residu for the days we weren’t there. That’s when we decided to build an installation with a big kaleidoscope and some ambro’s we made during the intended two days.
Because of the positive responses we had due to a nice interview in NRC Next that week, we couldn’t leave! So we ended up with 10 days of making tintypes en ambrotypes, a nice installation next to us and having a lot of fun.
