A portrait from our night in TROUW. We love this one. His blue hair appears as if it is blonde. His jewelry refers almost to a long forgotten empire from the past. His eyes closed, and his hands fragile, makes you think he is dreaming about the times he was ruler of the world. Thank you Bas, for this one!
On the 21st of December we shot some nice plates at Nachtbazaar in TROUW, Amsterdam. Some people knew us from Magnet Festival earlier this year, but for a lot of visitors tinypes and ambrotypes were a totally ‘new’ thing. Our first ‘sitter’ that evening was an extraordinary man with his old terrier (which fell asleep during the six sec exposure…). And his picture came out perfectly, very aristocratic look and feel. It’s a shame we don’t have a picture of that plate…

Wet Plate & Airplanes: the Early Birds!
Who says man can’t fly because we weren’t born with wings?
Thanks tot Peter van Hal, we had the privilige to go to Lelystad where The Early Birds Foundation is situated.
“The Early Birds Foundation aims to preserve the heritage of these and other ‘early birds’ by carefully restoring and rebuilding aircraft and engines. The results of these activities can be seen during airshows and by visiting our working museum.“
All were having some difficulties with exposure (Dutch weather) Alex Timmermans made some nice plates as Peter and Arjen were struggling with some chemical problems. But hey, troubleshooting is half the work and increases your skills.
Also Ferry vd Vliet and Raewyn Dunn were there to enjoy the wet plate process and airplanes.
As Alex beautifully points out on his blog (go see!). It is all about the passion. For both wet plate and aircraft. Passion for pushing limits and crossing boundaries.
I wasn’t there, which I regret, but somehow this craftmanship, the skill and patience for restoring and the love for being up there surrounded with sky, reminded me of some Shakespeare poetry (totally out of context, but whatever):

This was the first edition of Klaverkade, platform for artists and designers to present themselves to the ‘outside world’. In the theme Art, skills and technique we were probably a bit of a strange appearance, but then again, also an interresting attraction. We didn’t expect it to be that busy at our Tintype Studio, but we shot around 30 plates that day!

We adjusted an old SLR for the medallion size tintype and a Seagull for the 6 x 6. We love the small ones, although the camera’s are less impressive and we’d like to try ultra format size too one day :)

In between the two day hang-out in Amersfoort we drove back to Amsterdam to enjoy some tintyping in the middle of the night at Starbikes, one of the spots where Nuit Blanche was held. The ladies ‘Van de Wijs’ came up with a Parisian ‘Bicycle Boudoir’. It was quite windy, we broke a few lightbulbs, but besides that it was an awesome evening with nice guests and gladly enough Club Mate, to keep us awake. Around 3 o’clock we left, knowing that within a few hours we’d be on our way back to Amersfoort again.

While Luther & Peter were making ultra large format ambrotypes and Alex medium size plates (some nice ones of us!), we completed this weekend with the tiny medallion size tintypes. Good weather, nice live music and all in a beautiful garden (with wild strawberries!)

All black aluminum tintype 9cm x 12cm or 13cm x 18cm
April 2012, Ecuelles, France. A beautiful sight along the river Saone. Birds of pray everywhere, owls, lots of buzzing bees… As long as we’re not able to live in such a nice place, we’re glad that we have friends who do!
A good opportunity to test our mobile dark box… It still needs some adjustments, but we were perfectly able to use it for small and medium plates.
The blind curtain works well and so is the functionality of the bended tent-piece for holding the cloth!
