May 2014
A rainy day, foggy when the sun finally broke through. Rain and old gear are not best friends, but it seems that rain and Wet Plate are completely fine with each other.
Accompanied by the sound of forging metal and sizzling water from the blacksmith next to our spot, we sort of we bumped into a bearded sitter (whose plate melted under varnish last year), two ladies selling old fashioned candy, a family taking a break, and as always we bumped into some great ‘silent’ stills…

Remember Art & Science?
Always nice to see Merel Bekking still enjoys her tintype profile pic. In this case we are credited along with her interview in Volkskrant Magazine about this amazing design project.

“Emrys” tintype 18 cm x 24 cm

Emrys, is a wonderful ‘sitter’. I guess he’s used to it, but he still manages to not overpose, or get bored. This is one of the of 20 plates that he posed for that day. He held track of it and aimed for a (new) world record!

European Collodion Weekend 2014
Again it is time for us all wet plate nerds to gather around the fire (lit with collodion of course) to have a good in depth conversation about our chemistry, our mistakes and successes. Of course in relationships like these, there is a moment for booze, for frustration and relief (always when the group picture is done). A hello, a hug, a kiss and goodbye again. Until we meet again folks! Thanks!

Deadly Nightshade
‘Nachtschade’ (nightshade) is known to be deadly. These musicians ask the impossible from you: a shoot at cafe De Richel (Nes Amsterdam, probably the smallest, most unreachable street in town) and before you could say no, you’ve been working on their album cover for hours and hours, smoking 50 cigarettes in a row. But you will be rewarded with a sincere smile, music & on-demand poetry and… a lifetime being on their guestlist. Thanks Maarten, Bram, Guy and Reid.

Jeff
This year already is full of unexpected encounters. This is Jeff from North Carolina, US. He came by to check us out, because he was around due to a pinhole gathering. The thing is that Arjen tends to shoot everybody who is enthousiastic about photography. And despite the pile of varnishing I have to do afterwards I love that habit. The Light Recordings: Chapter 1; Coffee - 6'32"

“Caffè Sotto 6’32’’ ” tintype 13 x 18 cm

‘The Light Recordings’
Chapter #1: Coffee : Caffè Sotto 6’32’’

‘The Light Recordings’ is a series of artworks and installations about recording time and compressing it in a single or a series of images/objects.

Chapter I, ‘Coffee’, is where we record different brewing methods with Wet Plate Collodion technique. One record has a shutter time as long as it takes to brew from start untill end. Caffè Sotto 6’32’’ took us 6 minutes and 32 seconds to shoot and brew.

A framed fine art repro of this tintype is now ‘on the road’  with the Coffee & Arts project (http://www.coffeeartproject.com/Amsterdam/Gallery.aspx)

“Ron” tintype 18 cm x 24 cm
We, as collodionistic freaks, have (secret) gatherings. Fotografica Fair in Nieuwegein is one of these moments where we meet our fellow lens hunters, collectors and other interesting people (not so secret). Last March we did some demo’s with Alex Timmermans. For that we used Alex’ Dallmeyer 3A to ‘shoot’ some visitors (which were not so many, as it was a perfect Saturday for the first BBQ of the year). This is one of our favorites plates that day. I love the way this plate appears simple & clean but still friendly and soft with a bokeh that makes me drool.

Caffè Sotto: the maker
This is Mike, the brains and designer behind this lovely machine. Not only is this machine a joy to look at, but it makes a perfect ritual and a very nice and subtle coffee at the table, if you like. It’s produced in our own little country (Netherlands), but inspired by the social aspect of the Italian coffee culture.
Thanks Jeroen (www.coffeelab.nl) & Mike, for sharing this beautiful design with us, and Mike, for the privilege to shoot you a portrait.

Aude et Sébastien, two wonderful persons intriged by the collodion process too. That is passion + passion combined with a fascination for crafts in general, accompanied with some lunch and wine. The recipe for a super inspiring afternoon.
